Lake Issyk-Kul is the pearl of Tien Shan, the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan. This is the second largest tectonic lake in the world. The Issyk-Kul valley is replete with healing hot mineral springs and mud. Karakol is the regional center of the Issyk-Kul region, located in the eastern part 12 km from the lake. It was founded in 1869 as a military and administrative center on the caravan road to Kashgaria.
