On the shore of Lake Issyk-Kul
Welcome to Lake Issyk-Kul!
Lake Issyk-Kul occupies the central part of the valley surrounded by Terskey and Kungey Ala-Too mountain ranges. It’s the “sapphire” treasure of Kyrgyzstan with the unique combination of mountain, marine and steppe climate, crystal-clear water and air and variety of colors during a day.
Lake Issyk-Kul is the largest in Tien- Shan mountains (6,236 sq.km., length: 182 km. width: 60 km) and it has a maximum depth of 668 meters (2004 foot). Issy-Kul means “Warm Lake” in Kyrgyz, it doesn’t freeze in winter and white and black swans spend winter there. The altitude of the lake is 1,609m (3, 27 foot) above sea level. It is the second largest alpine lake in area after Lake Titicaca in South America and the second-deepest lake on the Earth. Dozen of rivers and streams flow into the lake, yet none flows out.
Issyk-Kul is the habitat for unique and rare plants, such as wild tulips and lilies, important medicinal herbs and Tien-Shan spruce forests. Mountain wildlife includes snow leopards, ibex and other mountain goats, Marco Polo sheep, bear, deer, wild boar, marmots, badges; vultures and eagles, pheasants, partridges and wild turkeys. Trout and carp are caught commercially in Lake Issyk Kul by a small fleet.
